2023 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize truck whose value is reinforced with each new model year. In fact, when it comes to Toyota’s portfolio, the smaller Tacoma outsells Toyota’s full-size pickup truck, the Tundra. With plenty of affordable customization options, the 2023 Tacoma adds another attractive model to its third generation of midsize trucks. Let’s dive into some of the coolest features you’ll find on the 2023 model, from its performance capabilities to its safety technology.

What’s New for the 2023 Tacoma?

The 2023 Tacoma doesn’t change drastically from its previous model year, yet its appearance remains one of its most updated feature categories. For those familiar with the Tacoma line, two new appearance packages are available with the SR5 trim level, in particular: the SX package and the Chrome package. While the SX package includes black wheels, lug nuts, over-fender, badging, and other assorted details, the Chrome package, per the name, uses chrome material for these same elements and also comes with a leather-wrapped shift knob.

Exterior Features and Trim Levels

Available in seven different trim levels, the 2023 Tacoma maintains its recognizable appearance and tough exterior. Its standard trim level, the SR, includes projector beam headlights, a six-foot fiber-reinforced, sheet-molded composite bed with storage compartments, color-keyed heated power door mirrors, a lockable and removable tailgate, a deck rail system with four tie-down cleats and four bed tie-down points, skid plates on the engine and front suspension, and an integrated tailgate spoiler.

In more premium trim levels, you can add features such as a front grille with a camera, an AC power outlet, a power moonroof, a hard tri-fold tonneau cover, a panoramic view monitor, insulated bed storage, and various color and material customization packages. Other elements, such as the bed, wheel, and cab sizes, are also highly customizable.

Power and Performance

The standard engine included with the 2023 Tacoma is a 2.7L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with VVT-i. This engine gets 159 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission with intelligence. The standard Tacoma has rear-wheel drive with automatic limited-slip differential and variable assist power steering and brakes. It has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds and is estimated to get around 21 mpg combined.

Aside from these standard performance specs, you can upgrade to as much as a 3.5L V-6 DOHC direct-injection Atkinson-cycle engine with VVT-iW and VVT-i. This engine gets 278 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 265 lb-ft of torque, making it nearly twice as powerful as the standard engine option. In addition, if you prefer, you can choose a manual transmission rather than an automatic one.

Interior Design and Comfort

Whether you choose the access cab or the double cab size, the interior of the 2023 Tacoma balances comfort and toughness for the perfect work truck or adventure vehicle. The standard model includes soft-touch materials, with the option to upgrade to leather-trimmed seating. The 10-way driver’s seat is power-adjustable, and every V-6 Tacoma features dual-zone automatic climate control. You can also add a power sliding rear window and a power tilt/slide moonroof for even greater visibility of your surroundings.

Safety Features and Technology

The 2023 Tacoma offers all the latest safety features you could want, including Toyota’s Star Safety System, which offers vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and smart stop technology. Plus, you can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert for the ultimate sense of control. In terms of driver assist features, other available systems include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams.

In addition to all its built-in features and technology, Toyota offers a range of advanced technology to enhance your driving experience. This includes remote connect, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, 24/7 safety connect, destination assist, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and the service connect app, as well as plenty of available infotainment features such as the 8-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a premium six-speaker audio system, and Amazon Alexa connectivity.

Off-Road Capability and Toughness

With the TRD Off-Road trim level, your 2023 Tacoma has plenty of off-road capabilities to ensure great performance and toughness. Crawl control helps when navigating trickier terrain by automatically adjusting your throttle and brakes on various low-speed settings, while the  Electronically locking rear differential provides plenty of grip in low-traction situations. Bilstein shocks are also standard on the TRD trim level to provide a smooth ride, even over rough surfaces. There’s a multi-terrain select feature to optimize traction and hill start assist control and a multi-terrain monitor to keep you aware of any potential obstacles nearby.

Customization Options

In terms of customization, the 2023 Tacoma comes in various looks and packages. As mentioned previously, the SX and Chrome packages add bold details to the exterior design, while the Nightshade special edition Tacoma offers a completely blacked-out appearance. Meanwhile, the Trail special edition Tacoma has a heritage-inspired design with bronze finishings.
