Full-size SUVs are among the most popular vehicles in the United States, and two of the best representatives of this class are Toyota and Chevrolet. The Toyota Sequoia and the Chevrolet Tahoe are roughly comparable models that consistently vie for supremacy among U.S. auto buyers. Let’s examine the key characteristics of the 2024 Toyota Sequoia vs. the Chevrolet Tahoe to help you decide between them.
What Are The Specs?
The 2024 Toyota Sequoia and Chevrolet Tahoe are direct competitors in full-size SUVs. The Sequoia is available in five trim levels, with the following key standard features:
- SR5: Panoramic view monitor, power tilt/slide moonroof and sliding sunshade, 8-inch multimedia touchscreen, and an eight-speaker audio system.
- Limited: SofTex-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated eight-way power front-row seats, heated steering wheel, 14-inch multimedia touch screen, and an eight-speaker audio system.
- Platinum: Premium LED headlights, daytime running lights, power tilt/slide panoramic roof and power sunshade, second-row captain’s chairs, 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, and a 14-speaker audio system with subwoofer and amplifier.
- TRD Pro: Off-road suspension, Black TOYOTA heritage grill with LED light bar and amber marker lights, dual-tip exhaust, and a leather-trimmed manual tilt/telescopic heated steering wheel.
- Capstone: Leather-trimmed seats with contrast stitching, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, power-extending running boards, and a 10-inch color head-up display.
The Tahoe comes in the following six varieties:
- LS: Premium Smooth Ride suspension and chrome roof-rack side rails.
- LT: Auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless charging for one compatible mobile device, hands-free programmable liftgate, and a nine-speaker audio system.
- RST: Jet Black interior, monochromatic black grille, and trim-specific badging.
- Z71: Recovery hooks, skid plate, and tubular assist steps.
- Premier: Magnetic Ride Control and a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system.
- High Country: Magnetic Ride Control with adaptive suspension and trim-specific grille, sill plates, and interior stitching.
Updates for the 2024 Model Year
Though neither model has undergone a redesign for the 2024 model year, the Toyota Sequoia offers a few updates to get excited about, such as:
- Nightshade Edition: The Nightshade Edition is a design package available on a range of Toyota models, including the 2024 Sequoia Limited trim level. The 20-inch matte-black alloy wheels, blacked-out exterior, and black badging lend a bolder look to the already fierce design of this full-size SUV.
- Expanded availability of the TRD Off-Road package: What was once available only on the Sequoia Limited has now expanded to the Platinum trim level. The TRD Off-Road package enhances your vehicle’s capabilities with an off-road suspension system, skid plate, electronically controlled locking rear differential, crawl control, hill-descent control, and off-road-specific driving modes.
The Chevrolet Tahoe doesn’t offer updates for the new year, so it’s a carryover from the 2023 model.
Exterior Dimensions
The 2024 Toyota Sequoia and Chevrolet Tahoe are approximately the same in their exterior dimensions but different enough to matter in tighter urban and residential driving environments.
The Sequoia is the more modestly sized model, measuring 208.1 inches long and 79.8 inches wide. It comes in varying heights depending on the trim and drivetrain configuration. The lowest-set models are the SR5 four-wheel drive (4WD), Limited two-wheel drive (2WD), Platinum 2WD, and Capstone 2WD, which all measure 74.2 inches tall. The following levels are the SR5 2WD, Platinum 4WD, and Capstone 4WD, which stand at 74.5 inches high. That leaves the Limited 4WD, which stands at 74.6 inches, and the TRD Pro, which is 77.7 inches tall.
In comparison, the dimensions of the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe are consistent across all trim levels: 210.7 inches long, 81 inches wide, and 75.9 inches tall. Its horizontal dimensions may challenge some drivers, as the added bulk can complicate gauging one’s distance from objects to the vehicle’s front, rear, and sides.
Interior Accommodation
The Sequoia and the Tahoe are three-row vehicles with spacious cabins that accommodate up to eight people. The Sequoia features second-row captain’s chairs as standard for the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone trims, a more comfortable and convenient arrangement that reduces overall seating to seven.
Powertrain, Drivetrain, and Performance
The 2024 Toyota Sequoia is unique among top full-size SUVs in that it forgoes a V-8 powertrain in favor of a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 hybrid, which outperforms the Tahoe with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Apart from the 4WD-exclusive TRD Pro, all trims are rear-wheel drive (RWD) as standard, with 4WD being available as an upgrade. The Sequoia’s impressive acceleration takes you from zero to 60 mph in around 5.6 seconds. Also, when properly equipped, it can tow up to 9,520 pounds, depending on your trim and drivetrain configuration.
In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe offers two drivetrain options. The LS, LT, RST, Z71, and Premier trims come standard with a 5.3-liter V-8 generating 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, whereas the High Country trim features a 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Every trim is available in either RWD or 4WD, except for the 4WD-only Z71. The zero-to-60-mph times may hover at or above seven seconds, depending on your engine, and the towing capacity maxes out at 8,400 pounds.
Fuel Economy
Overall, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia is the more fuel-efficient option. RWD models get an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, while 4WD obtains 19 and 22 mpg, respectively. In comparison, the Taho achieves 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway across all trims and both drivetrain options.
