Toyota makes an impressive lineup of SUVs that appeal to various needs, lifestyles, and budgets, from the compact crossover Corolla Cross SUV to the full-size adventure-ready 4Runner vehicle. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain configurations offer fuel-efficient options to those looking to save money at the pump. And you can skip the pump altogether with Toyota’s newest bZ4X all-electric SUV.
Finding the roomiest of these SUVs seems simple, but it depends on how you define roomy. You may think three rows of seats are more spacious. Others might find cargo capacity the deciding factor. Still, more people might consider individual seat measurements the most important feature.
So we looked into the cabin space of the full-size Toyota SUV lineup. In this article, we compare passenger volume, cargo capacity, and seat space and let you decide which model suits your tastes best.
2023 Toyota Sequoia
After the Land Cruiser drove off into the proverbial sunset in 2021, the Sequoia now holds the top spot as the largest of the Toyota SUVs. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia rides on a 122-inch wheelbase that supports an overall length of 208.1 inches. At 79.8 inches wide and 74.5 inches tall, the Sequoia strikes an imposing stance.
Inside, the cabin seats up to eight passengers in three rows. Models with the standard moonroof offer 39.2 inches of headroom in the front seat, 38.4 inches in the second row, and 35.6 inches of space in the third row. Opting for the panoramic moonroof gives you slightly more headroom. You have 39.3 inches of headroom in the front, 37.5 in the middle seat, and 35.6 in the rear.
The Sequoia offers 41.2 inches of legroom in the front seats, 39.2 inches in the second row, and 33.7 inches in the third row. The hip room in the front seat measures 62.6 inches. The second row offers 60.8 inches, and the third row has 50.9 inches of hip room. The shoulder room in the front seat comes in at 65 inches, 61.8 inches in the second row, and 62.6 inches in the back seat.
If you value cargo capacity, the Sequoia has plenty of space. The third row slides to accommodate larger passengers. With the third row at its most spacious setting, you get 11.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Moving it to its smallest setting, you get 22.3 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold.
The third row also folds flat to open up 49 cubic feet of cargo capacity. And folding the second and third row flat delivers 86.9 cubic feet of space.
2023 Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander model resides in the full-size SUV category with the Sequoia. The Highlander’s 112.2-inch wheelbase supports an overall length of 194.9 inches. The Highlander stands 68.1 inches tall and measures 76 inches wide.
You have up to 41.2 inches of headroom in the front seat, 39.4 inches of space in the second row, and 36.1 inches in the rear. Legroom in the Highlander measures 42 inches in the front, 38.7 inches in the middle seats, and 28 inches in the back seats.
Hip room isn’t bad, coming in at 57.2 inches in the front, 57 inches in the second row, and 45.6 inches in the third row. Plus, the Highlander has 59 inches of shoulder room in the front, 58.4 inches of space in the second row, and 55 inches in the back.
The Highlander has 16 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row. You get 48.4 cubic feet of space when you fold the third row flat. And to accommodate larger and longer gear, you can fold the second and third rows flat for 84.3 cubic feet of space.
2024 Toyota Grand Highlander
Toyota is rolling out a new Grand Highlander for the 2024 model year. The Grand Highlander offers similar styling as its smaller sibling but in a larger package. Toyota’s Grand Highlander has a 116.1-inch wheelbase that supports an overall length of 201.4 inches. The Grand Highlander stands 72.1 inches tall and measures 78.3 inches wide.
Inside standard hard-top models, you have 41.5 inches of headroom in the front seat, 40.2 inches in the second row, and 37.2 inches in the third row. With a panoramic moonroof, the headroom measures 40 inches in the front, 38.5 inches in the middle seat, and 37.2 inches in the back seat.
You have 41.7 inches of legroom for front-riding passengers, 39.5 inches for those in the second row, and 33.5 inches for third-row passengers. The hip room measures 56.5 inches in the front, 57 inches in the second row, and 45.7 inches in the third row. The more spacious Grand Highlander offers 60.2 inches of shoulder room in the front and 57.5 inches for the rear seat.
Of course, the larger Grand Highlander has more space for gear. You get 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 57.9 cubic feet with the third row folded flat. And with the second and third rows stowed, you have 97.5 cubic feet of cargo area.
2023 Toyota 4Runner
Technically, the Toyota 4Runner slots in the midsize SUV category. But because of its wild popularity, legendary capability, and three rows of seats, we included it in our comparison. The 4Runner’s 109.8-inch wheelbase supports an overall length of 190.2 inches, and it stands 72 inches tall and measures 75.8 inches wide.
Headroom in the 4Runner measures 39.3 inches in the front, 38.6 inches in the middle, and 34.3 inches in the rear. You get 41.7 inches of legroom in the front seat, 32.9 inches in the second row, and 29.3 inches in the third row.
The hip room in the front seat comes in at 56.5 inches. You have 55.7 inches in the second row and 43.3 inches in the rear seat. The shoulder room is 57.8 inches, 57.8 inches, and 57.7 inches, respectively.
A cargo capacity of 9 cubic feet offers enough space for your daily excursions. Folding the third row opens up 46.3 cubic feet and folding the second and third rows gets 88.8 cubic feet.
