2024 Corolla vs. Honda Civic

The Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic aren’t just specific automotive models but families of compact passenger vehicles available in multiple body styles. They also share a standing as two of the most popular and best-reviewed names in their class. Let’s examine the key characteristics of the 2024 Corolla vs. the Honda Civic, so you have a clearer understanding of how they compare.

Overview of the 2024 Corolla and Honda Civic

The 2024 Corolla is available in six distinctive models. These include the following:

  • Corolla: The flagship Corolla is a five-seat sedan, ideal for families, commuters, and road trippers.
  • Corolla Hatchback: The hatchback version is more suitable if you want a little more cargo capacity in your everyday drive.
  • Corolla Hybrid: The Corolla Hybrid pairs a gas engine with an electric motor for a major boost in fuel efficiency.
  • GR Corolla: The GR Corolla is a sport-tuned performance model capable of exhilarating speeds.
  • Corolla Cross: The Corolla Cross is a reimagining of the Corolla passenger car as a subcompact crossover SUV.
  • Corolla Cross Hybrid: The Cross Hybrid, like the Corolla Hybrid, ups your gas mileage with its gas engine/electric motor combination.

The 2024 Honda Civic also has many faces, but its variety spreads across only four models, with no hybrid model:

  • Civic Sedan: The Civic Sedan is Honda’s counterpart to the Toyota Corolla, the flagship everyday vehicle that seats up to five people.
  • Civic Hatchback: The same goes for the Civic Hatchback, whose roomier rear area accommodates more cargo.
  • Civic Si Sedan: This sport-injected model is a sportier version of the common Civic.
  • Civic Type R: The Type R model is the high-performance version of the hatchback, a vehicle aimed at speedsters and racing enthusiasts.

Style

Despite the broad range of body styles, you’ll notice some common stylistic features within each model family. The 2024 Corollas, gently sloped at both the front and the back ends, lean toward the sleek and elegant end of the spectrum. This quality comes into stark relief with styling options such as the Nightshade Package, characterized by a black-painted rear spoiler and sport side rocker panels, blackout badging, black heated power side mirrors, a black roof-mounted shark-fin antenna, and 18-inch bronze-finished alloy wheels.

In comparison, the 2024 Civic presents a more straightforward design. Although the front end has a somewhat more elongated appearance that’s modest with distinguishing features, it encompasses an overall athletic look that aligns with Honda’s focus on sportiness. This quality is accentuated with the HPD Package, which adds the HPD emblem, an HPD decklid spoiler, and HPD underbody spoilers.

Powertrain and Performance

Looking at only the standard powertrain option for each of the flagship sedans and hatchback models, it is clear that the 2024 Toyota Corolla has an edge over the Honda Civic. The Corolla features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, which can get you from zero to 60 mph in a little over 8 seconds. The Civic also comes standard with a four-cylinder engine, but it maxes out at 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque, going from zero to 60 mpg in 9.7 seconds, according to Consumer Reports.

The hot-hatch models are more evenly matched. The 2024 GR Corolla boasts a turbocharged three-cylinder engine that generates 300 hp, whereas the Civic Type R has an I-4 that puts out 315 hp. But even with the extra horsepower, the Civic Type R can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, just like the GR Corolla. Additionally, the GR Corolla reaches 100 mph at a faster clip — 11.4 seconds versus the Type R’s 12.1 seconds.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy varies greatly across models, powertrains, and drivetrains, but the 2024 Corolla has the overall advantage over the Civic in this category as well. Refer to the table below to see the best fuel economy rating for each member of the Corolla and Civic family. The table is arranged so that equivalent models are easily compared side-by-side.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2024 Toyota Corolla and 2024 Honda Civic have both received excellent safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with most areas receiving a Superior or Good designation. Although both also received five-star safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Civic Sedan and Civic Hatchback are currently the subjects of a recall for incorrectly assembled steering racks
