EV vs. Hybrid vs. Gas vs. Diesel
The automobile is continuously evolving. The gasoline engine in the first ever car was a one-cylinder, two-stroke engine. Nowadays, some vehicles have as many as 12 cylinders. Diesel engines were created at around the same time as gas engines, but because of their distinct differences, diesel’s place in history took an alternate road. Interestingly, the first electric and hybrid electric cars were built in the same decade, the 1890s, with gasoline and diesel engines.
You might argue that since these vehicles all played a role in the birth of the automobile, the domination of the gas engine in the industry today was the best option. However, the world wants greener, more fuel-efficient options, which is causing the popularity of EVs and hybrid engines to rise. Some say that diesel will soon go the way of the dinosaur, and the gas engine isn’t too far behind.
Is any of this true, and if so, why? Unfortunately, you won’t find a simple answer as to which powertrain prevails over the other. We didn’t, but we thought we’d share what we found to help you to better understand the different powertrain options.
EV vs. Hybrid vs. Gas vs. Diesel Powertrain Differences

2022 Toyota Prius Prime Being Charged
Diesel engines burn less fuel than gasoline engines and use a compression ignition system to ignite the diesel fuel. Diesel engines are stronger because of the compression ignition, which makes them more durable and long-lasting. A diesel powertrain uses an exhaust gas recirculation system to capture unburned particulates and return them to the cylinders. Diesel engines produce much higher torque numbers, which makes them ideal for towing and hauling heavy loads over long distances.
Gasoline engines burn more fuel than diesel engines and use a spark ignition system to ignite the gasoline. Manufacturers don’t have to use a heavier engine construction to support the ignition, which makes them less durable than a diesel engine. Still, you can achieve significant power numbers with a gas powertrain when towing and hauling heavy loads. Traditionally, gas is more expensive than diesel, but recently, the price of diesel has surpassed gasoline. Despite this, the efficiency of diesel still makes it a cheaper alternative to gas.
The hybrid gas powertrain consumes less gas than straight gas engines and incorporates an electric motor into the system to provide additional power. Some hybrid powertrain cars, usually plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), can operate in electric-only mode. A PHEV has a larger battery than regular hybrid vehicles, which gives them a more extended driving range than electric-only power. This configuration provides significant fuel savings over straight gas engines.
EVs don’t burn gas or diesel. Instead, electricity powers them. The EV powertrain consists of an electric motor or motors and a single gearbox to distribute the power, which makes it a much smaller unit. You need a significantly larger battery pack to provide enough power to drive long distances. Most EVs have a top driving range of 200 miles on a single charge, and newer models achieve as much as 300–400 miles.
Electricity is cheaper than gasoline. However, electricity production predominantly uses fossil fuels and could offset any perceived green benefits. Opponents of EVs argue that EV batteries use rare earth materials that have a limited supply, and after the batteries no longer hold the charge, it is challenging to dispose of them properly.
Pros and Cons of EV, Hybrid, Gas, and Diesel Powertrains
Like we said earlier, there’s no simple answer. In many cases, how you drive has a significant impact on efficiency and performance, and your commute factors into which powertrain might suit you best. We will list each of the pros and cons below to help you to decide.
Diesel Powertrain Pros
- More efficient than gasoline.
- Provides higher torque for towing and hauling.
- Durable construction, which lasts longer with fewer repairs.
- Reliable refueling network.
- Bio-diesel fuel alternatives may offer better economy and less pollution.
Diesel Powertrain Cons
- Lower horsepower than gas and electric vehicles.
- Noisier than other vehicles.
- More pollution than other vehicles.
- Higher cost of repairs.
Gasoline Powertrain Pros
- More horsepower than diesel engines.
- Reliable refueling network.
- Lower cost for repairs.
Gasoline Powertrain Cons
- Traditionally higher fuel costs.
- More frequent repairs and maintenance.
Hybrid Powertrain Pros
- Better fuel efficiency.
- Quieter engines.
- Tax incentives offer additional savings.
Hybrid Powertrain Cons
- More expensive to purchase than gas-only vehicles.
EV Powertrain Pros
- Lower fuel costs vs. gas and diesel.
- Exceptional power on demand.
- Higher torque output.
- Lightweight and quiet.
- Zero emissions.
- Tax incentives offer additional savings.
EV Powertrain Cons
- Limited driving range.
- Its smaller refueling network requires more planning for long-distance travel.
- Fossil fuels used to produce electricity may offset any green benefits.
- EV batteries may present disposal problems.
The Impact of Your Driving Habits
Your driving habits impact your vehicle’s performance, regardless of the powertrain. For example, if you drive for an hour in the city with lots of stop-and-go traffic, you’ll use more fuel than if you were to drive for an hour on the freeway at cruising speeds. Those drivers with a so-called “lead foot” use more fuel than drivers who observe the speed limit.
Electric vehicles have a range of 200 miles or more. However, if you use other electrical systems while driving, these systems deplete your EV battery and lower your range. For instance, drivers in the Florida summer heat use their air conditioner to keep them cool, but this drains the battery. New England drivers need to use their heater and window defroster for those cold winter months.
The Winner Is…
We’re not sure that any powertrain wins or loses. Ultimately, it comes down to what you need from your vehicle. An EV or PHEV offers the best savings if you want a fuel-efficient commuter car. A fuel-efficient gas model may work well if your driving needs require longer trips in rural areas. Drivers needing to tow and haul heavy loads benefit most from a gas or diesel powertrain. Spirited driving enthusiasts looking to lower their carbon footprint love the power, performance, and zero emissions of the EV powertrain.

The Best Towing Service in Prosper, TX
You always hope that everything goes well when you’re on a road trip or going for a drive, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. When Should You Call A Tow Truck?

Image by OurMonmouth is licensed with CC BY 2.0
You may need to call a tow truck to help you move your vehicle from where it’s stalled or unable to start and tow it to the nearest body shop or dealership. Tow trucks can help you get your car to a mechanic quickly and safely. Here are some times you may need to call a tow truck:
Engine Trouble
If you’re having trouble with your engine, you can call a tow truck to move your car without turning it on. You may notice you’re having trouble because you hear a strange noise when the vehicle is running or your engine light is on. Continuing to drive a vehicle after you’ve identified a problem with the engine can damage your car or result in an accident, and engine repair can be very costly. If you suspect engine trouble, it’s best to call a tow truck right away.
Out of Gas
You can run out of gas by forgetting to fill up your gas tank or by overestimating how far you have to drive on the amount of gas you have. It can be an easy fix if you have access to more gasoline, but otherwise, your car won’t be able to run. You can call a tow truck to come and move your car and take it somewhere where you can fill it up with gas again. Alternatively, the tow truck may have some extra gasoline for emergencies that you can use in your car to get you to the nearest gas station.
Extreme Weather
Weather can surprise you when you’re on the road, and you may need some help to make sure you don’t drive in dangerous circumstances. For example, if you’re in a car when unexpected snow occurs, you may not be able to drive safely through the slippery and thick snow. In those cases, you can call a tow truck to remove your car without you having to drive it under scary circumstances.

They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and the charming town of Prosper, Texas, is a prime example of that. While the town itself is more quaint and cozy than it is big, it’s known by many as a “small town with big heart.” It’s also big on business, activities, and appeal.
Prosper has parks and trails. It has dining and nightlife. It has plenty of things to do. But have you ever wondered how Prosper came to be the fine city that it is today? Brought to you by Longo Toyota of Prosper, here’s the history of the town you love.
Live Long and Prosper

The area that would later become Prosper, Texas, was first settled back in 1846. It began as two separate communities, which were called Rock Hill and Richland. The soil there was rich, and land was cheap — farmers grew and sold cotton, and land could be bought for as little as $3.50 per acre.
The area began to be built up, gaining momentum when the county courts pushed for a quick sale of land plots for development. But it was the railroads that really put Prosper on the map. When the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway opened in Texas in 1902, Prosper was conveniently located along the route, approximately halfway between Dallas and Sherman. That was the same year that Rock Hill and Richland combined their land and resources to become a single town.
You Name It!
As this new town came into being in 1902, it still needed a name. Officials wanted to carry over the name Richland from the Rock Hill/Richland merger. However, they soon discovered that another Richland had beaten them to the punch — there was already a town called Richland elsewhere in Texas, which had been founded many years before Prosper. So the new community remained nameless.
To rectify the problem, the postmaster at the time sent out a query to the townspeople to help officially name the town and his newly established post office. A man known as J.C. Slaughter came forward. He said that since the crops had been especially prosperous that year, why didn’t they dub the town Prosper? The name stuck, and so did that outlook because the little town prospered indeed.
Everyone and Their Uncas
It wasn’t until 12 years later, in 1914, that Prosper was incorporated. The town had a population of just 500 at that point. With the incorporation of the town, they also elected their very first mayor. Although they called him U.N. Clary for short, the mayor’s full name of Uncas Norvell Clary won him a place on the list of “strangest names in political history.”
Nearly as unique as his name is his story: Not only did Clary serve as mayor for a whopping 49 years, but he was also involved in the management of the Prosper State Bank for 56 years until his retirement in 1965.
Getting Down to Business

In the beginning, Prosper built its success on the cotton and grain industries, including corn and wheat. Just how well the town was doing fluctuated, depending on what the going rate of these various cash crops was at the time. In its heyday, Prosper was cranking out 3,000 to 4,000 bales of cotton annually, which it shipped around the world, along with 75,000 bushels of wheat and dairy products worth thousands of dollars. Several different mills were built in Prosper to process the grains. The town also served as a shipping center for nearby farms.
Once the automobile began to be more commonplace, greater numbers of people traveled in and out of Prosper. Some just passed through, while many stayed and helped develop the area. Improvements in farming and the invention of mechanical farming equipment also bolstered the economy of Prosper. The population grew very slowly, however. Even in 1980, the city still had only 675 residents. But between 2010 and 2020, Prosper saw a 201% growth spurt in its population, and today over 31,000 people call Prosper home.
Old School
The first school opened the same year that Prosper officially became Prosper, in 1902. It had just a handful of teachers and 100 students — a fifth of the town’s total population at the time. That original little schoolhouse was sold in 1910 and later became a hotel. To replace it, they built a two-story red brick school building and brought in two additional teachers. Sadly, that school burned down in 1923. The next school to come along was also brick but had nine classrooms and a spacious auditorium.
Prosper’s academic facilities have come a long way since then. The present-day high school is a 590,000-square-foot educational palace with nearly 3,000 students. It cost over $113 million to build and includes a medical tech lab, a broadcast studio, and a greenhouse, along with a restaurant fit for a chef and an indoor football field. Go Eagles!

Prosper in the Present
Located about 32 miles from the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and 35 miles from downtown Dallas, Prosper owes some of its current prosperity to its position within the greater Dallas metropolitan area. It was even named the fifth best suburb in the Dallas area by D Magazine in 2010.
Prosper residents pride themselves on striving for excellence and maintaining a good quality of life, where families and people are important. They live by the town motto of “A place where everyone matters.” Many businesses thrive here, and Prosper is home to a wide range of industries.
