How to Check Coolant Levels
How to Check Coolant Levels
Before you start checking your coolant levels, you might be wondering, "What is coolant?"
Coolant is the fluid that transfers heat and helps to regulate the temperature of the engine block and parts. Whether your car is new or used, engine coolant is a vital part of vehicle health. The fluid contains additives that ensures it remains below 32 degrees F, but doesn't evaporate above 212 degrees F. Learn more about how to check coolant levels, and when to change it, by reading on below!
What to Look for
Despite what you may think, you won't have to open the radiator cap to check the coolant level. You can get a quick check of the level by looking at the markings on the side of the reservoir. Should the liquid hit the “full” marking line, you're all set. If it falls short of that, remove the radiator cap and add in the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Make sure to read the bottle of the coolant to determine if it's premixed. At this time, it's also good to check the hoses connecting to the radiator for any damage or leaks.
Note: If you're adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don't attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
When to See a Service Technician
Coolant is thicker than water but thinner than oil. If there is a sludgy appearance to the liquid, you should schedule service as soon as you can. This can be a good indicator that your car has an internal gasket leak. You can drive, but a leaking gasket will drain your coolant much faster than normal. This, in turn, means your engine is at a high risk of overheating and being severely damaged.
When to Change Coolant
Like other essential liquids that keep your car running, coolant levels deplete over time. It's a good idea to check coolant levels every three to six months. The liquid is usually blue, yellow, green, or red. If it is colorless or brownish, flush the system and replace the fluid.
