If you’re shopping for a reliable truck for work or play in the Prosper area, you’ll love the selection of pickups from Toyota. Currently, Toyota makes two models for the U.S. market. The Toyota Tundra has the full-size power and durability you desire with bold style. The Tundra’s smaller sibling, the Tacoma, offers plenty of styles to go with impressive performance.
Each pickup has unique specifications, including different cab styles, bed sizes, and hauling capacities. Combined with the various trim levels, you have dozens of options to build the perfect truck. To help, we asked our pickup specialists to put together the following guide. After reading, you’ll be ready to shop for your dream truck at our West University Drive dealership.
2023 Toyota Tundra
As the larger pickup, Toyota’s Tundra makes the most sense for truck owners who want maximum towing and hauling capabilities. Two cab styles and three bed sizes let you tailor your truck to your needs. The four-door Double Cab offers two rows of seats for five people to sit comfortably.
However, if you need to take the crew to the job site, the four-door CrewMax Cab has more head, leg, hip, and shoulder room in the back seat.
Toyota makes the Tundra in three bed sizes. A 5.5-foot bed makes sense if you don’t need to haul longer items. However, if you need to carry oversized items, you can opt for a 6.5-foot or an 8.1-foot bed.
Bed sizes vary depending on the cab style you choose. The larger the cab, the smaller the bed and vice versa. For example, you can get the CrewMax with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. The Double Cab has the option for a 6.5- or 8.1-foot bed.
You can choose from seven trim levels — the SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone. Prices range from an MSRP of $38,965 for the base model SR to $77,645 for the top-of-the-range Capstone. As you might expect, features improve as you move up the lineup.
Toyota Tundra Bed Size Dimensions and Payload
Here’s a look at each bed’s measurements and payload capacities.
| Bed size | Length | Width | Width between wells | Depth |
| 5.5-foot bed | 65.6 inches | 58.7 inches | 48.7 inches | 20.9 inches |
| 6.5-foot bed | 77.6 inches | 58.7 inches | 48.7 inches | 20.9 inches |
| 8.1-foot bed | 96.5 inches | 58.7 inches | 48.7 inches | 20.9 inches |
As you can see, only the length changes because Toyota uses the same chassis on each model. However, payload capacities change depending on the trim and cab style.
| Tundra trim/cab style/bed | Payload |
| Tundra SR Double Cab 6.5-foot bed | 1,940 pounds |
| Tundra SR Double Cab 8.1-foot bed | 1,875 pounds |
| Tundra SR CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,830 pounds |
| Tundra SR5 Double Cab 6.5-foot bed | 1,940 pounds |
| Tundra SR5 Double Cab 8.1-foot bed | 1,875 pounds |
| Tundra SR5 CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,820 pounds |
| Tundra SR5 CrewMax 6.5-foot bed | 1,810 pounds |
| Tundra Limited Double Cab 6.5-foot bed | 1,860 pounds |
| Tundra Limited CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,755 pounds |
| Tundra Limited CrewMax 6.5-foot bed | 1,680 pounds |
| Tundra Platinum CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,720 pounds |
| Tundra Platinum CrewMax 6.5-foot bed | 1,680 pounds |
| Tundra 1794 Edition CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,720 pounds |
| Tundra 1794 Edition CrewMax 6.5-foot bed | 1,630 pounds |
| Tundra TRD Pro CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,600 pounds |
| Tundra Capstone CrewMax 5.5-foot bed | 1,485 pounds |
The table shows that the smaller Double Cab configurations offer higher payload capacities than the larger CrewMax cabs. The variance is caused by the cab’s weight, which subtracts from the overall weight the frame can hold.
Toyota Tacoma
The midsize Tacoma pickup offers exceptional style and class-leading performance. However, its smaller size leads to two bed sizes and two cab styles. You can opt for a 5- or 6-foot bed and a Double Cab or Access Cab style. The seven available trims differ from the Tundra. You can choose between the SR, SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro trims.
The Tacoma trucks with 5-foot beds measure 60.5 inches long and 56.7 inches wide. Between the wheel wells, the bed measures 41.5 inches and has a depth of 19.1 inches. The six-foot beds run 73.7 inches long and have the same width and depth as the shorter bed.
Why Do Dimensions Matter?
Purchasing a truck for pleasure or work might change how you view your truck’s dimensions. For instance, if you need to haul camping gear or the occasional furniture, you’ll want to ensure your bed can fit these items. But the longer beds make more sense if you use your truck for work hauling long or large supplies and equipment.
Even though the pickup truck offers no height restrictions due to its open design, hauling taller items still requires you to have enough depth so that these items don’t tip out.
Toyota Truck Bed Features
Toyota designed its trucks with utility and durability in mind. As a result, you’ll find some great bed features to make your bed usage easier. For example, a sheet-molded composite material was used to construct the bed surface, making it ultra-durable. Its impact resistance helps prevent dents, dings, and scratches that lead to rust.
And select models have a tailgate release bump switch built into the left rear taillight. Bump the taillight, and the tailgate swings down, eliminating the need to put your gear down to operate the handle.
You can also add a bed lighting system and a 400-watt power inverter to elevate your camping and tailgating adventures. And the adjustable deck rail system allows you to customize your tie-downs to suit the adult toys you haul around. You can also add a camera system to view your bed while you drive. Live video streams to your infotainment touchscreen, allowing you to see if the bed contents shifted.
