2023 Toyota Alternative Fuel Lineup in Prosper, TX
Toyota is keeping pace with the global transition to green energy alternatives by offering a lineup of energy-efficient alternative fuel vehicles. Unfortunately, many people don’t fully understand the new technology that powers these vehicles, which results in various misconceptions. To clarify things, we had our alternative fuel vehicle experts break down the Toyota lineup. After reading this article, you’ll have a better understanding of these vehicles and how you can benefit from owning one.
What is an Alternative Fuel Vehicle?

We often think of fuel as gasoline and use these words interchangeably. When we are talking about alternative fuel vehicles, we are referring to cars that run on an alternative fuel to gas. However, you can define fuel as anything that is used to operate something. For example, food acts as fuel for our body and provides energy to work, play, grow, and heal. Wind provides enough power to propel boats when it is captured in a sail. Wood or coal that is burned on a stove provides enough heat to warm your house or cook your food. Electricity lights up your home and powers your television and other electronics. Nuclear power transforms nuclear energy into more useable electrical energy.
Of course, you can’t attach a sail to your car or use wood to power your vehicle’s engine. Your car requires gasoline or an alternative. Several revolutionary new alternative fuel vehicles have appeared in the automotive industry, and Toyota is at the forefront. In 2022, Toyota announced a hybrid version of every car in their lineup. Toyota plans to continue expanding its electric, hydrogen, and hybrid technology powertrain lineup for 2023 and beyond.
2023 Toyota Prius Prime Hydrogen-Powered Plug-In Hybrid
Toyota first introduced the Prius in 1997. The Prius was the world’s first hybrid electric vehicle, and it quickly caught the attention of the automobile industry by demonstrating that hybrid technology worked. Over the years, the hybrid and EV market turned from efficient vehicles without much in the way of style, comfort, or performance into fun-to-drive vehicles that were loaded with sophisticated style and the latest technology.
You can get the Prius Prime with a sporty exterior styling. Inside, you’ll enjoy the beautiful and durable SofTex synthetic upholstery and the latest in-vehicle technology, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is operated with an 11.6-inch touchscreen with a split-screen capability. In addition, the Qi-compatible wireless charging station keeps your smartphone charged without the cords. The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver-assist systems will help you drive safely.
The Prius will be available as gasoline and hydrogen PHEVs and a hybrid for the 2023 model year. For the first time, Toyota will blend hydrogen power with plug-in hybrid technology. Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Prius doesn’t use a hydrogen battery system that chemically converts hydrogen into electricity like the Toyota Mirai’s powertrain. Instead, it replaces the gas-burning engine with a hydrogen model.
2023 Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell
Toyota sold the first mass-produced Mirai in 2015. Since then, global sales have reached over 20,000 units. The mid-size Mirai sedan uses hydrogen to propel the vehicle. In this powertrain, hydrogen from the fuel tank joins with air from the intake grille in the fuel cell stack. A chemical reaction occurs when hydrogen and oxygen mix, which creates electricity that powers the Mirai. The chemical reaction only produces water, which makes it eco-friendly.
Mirai’s exterior blends coupe dynamics with fastback styling to create a sleek, sporty appearance. Inside, you have the SofTex upholstery and the latest tech, including Toyota Teammate, which is the new suite of driver-assist systems. Teammate includes Advanced Drive and Advanced Park. With Advanced Drive, your Mirai takes more control when driving on mapped roadways, while Advanced Park makes parking as simple as pushing a button.
2023 Toyota Corolla Hydrogen Plug-In Hybrid
Toyota has plans to remake the popular Corolla sedan using hydrogen as fuel in a hybrid powertrain. The powertrain uses a similar hybrid-engine technology that burns hydrogen instead of gasoline. You can expect the hydrogen PHEV Corolla to come with the same sharp exterior style and premium interior features as the standard Corolla.
2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
Toyota continues to expand its hybrid lineup with the all-new Corolla Cross Hybrid. This elegant SUV’s bold exterior styling, expansive, comfortable interior, and capable hybrid powertrain make it the perfect choice for your adventurous lifestyle. The hybrid engine delivers 194 hp while providing exceptional fuel efficiency. The standard all-wheel drive allows you to leave the pavement behind, while the paddle shifters and sport-tuned suspension make staying on the road a more exciting driving experience.
2023 Toyota bZ4X
The long-awaited Toyota bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV) has finally arrived. This all-electric BEV comes with aggressive styling cues, 20-inch alloy wheels, and an available all-wheel drive. Plus, you get up to 252 miles of driving range on a full charge with front-wheel drive and 242 miles with AWD. Its fast-charging capability achieves 80% power in as little as 30 minutes to get you quickly back on the road. Toyota has partnered with EVgo, a nationwide charging network of over 30,000 stations, which means that you get one year of complimentary charging at any EVgo station when you purchase a 2023 bZ4X.
A 12.3-inch multi-media touchscreen controls all your tech. Sync your smart devices with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for wireless operation. Apple Music and Amazon Music come preloaded for your listening pleasure, and you also get a free three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. In addition, Toyota has installed the next generation of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which is the latest suite of driver-assist systems designed to elevate your driving experience. You’ll enjoy advanced cruise control, forward collision alert, blind-spot protection, and automatic emergency braking, as well as the other conventional systems.
Toyota’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 is on track as they continue setting new standards for alternative fuel vehicles. At Longo Toyota of Prosper, we understand that not everyone wants to make the leap to an all-electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, and that’s the beauty of the Toyota lineup. There is a hybrid powertrain option for every Toyota model. Plug-in hybrid options exist for those who are looking to maximize the gas-powered hybrid. Toyota also has vehicles available for those savvy drivers who appreciate the zero emissions of all-electric and hydrogen fuel cell power.

History of High School Football in Prosper, TX
If you have children attending school in the Prosper Intermediate School District (ISD), you know how fast this thriving school community is growing. In 2019, the Prosper ISD was ranked as one of the top Dallas Fort Worth school districts, and it’s also been recognized as one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas. The reputation of this educational community reaches beyond academics. As their school body grows, so do their various athletic organizations, including high school football.
Longo Toyota of Prosper is proud to be part of a community that values the education of its students through academics, fine arts, and athletics. Let’s look at the history of football in Prosper, Texas.
Prosper High Schools

The vision of Prosper ISD — Grounded by Tradition, Soaring to New Beginnings — portrays how this district operates within all its schools, including its two secondary schools, Prosper and Rock Hill High School. Both schools are class 6A public schools serving western Collin County and parts of Denton County, McKinney, Frisco, and Celina. In 2020, Rock Hill High School welcomed its first high school students as the newest addition to the growing Prosper school district. Prosper High School also started the 2009-2010 school year in a brand-new building.
Prosper High School Athletics
The Prosper ISD Athletic Department emphasizes excellence, leadership, and relationships in all team sports. They see athletics as an extension of the educational setting. They believe that many important life lessons and values are developed while being part of a team. Through their athletic programs, like football, Prosper’s mission is to develop core traits among their student body, such as commitment, sacrifice, work ethic, teamwork, and competitiveness. They also encourage their students to understand the value of being a part of something bigger than themselves.
Prosper High School Football
With its ever-growing student body, Prosper High School has developed seven football teams to serve students and their families who are passionate about playing football. There are three first-year teams, three junior varsity teams, and Prosper Eagles Varsity football. Head Coach, Brandon Schmidt, is now in his 23rd season as a Texas high school coach and his eighth season as the head coach for Prosper High School.
Prosper High School football players have seen many shining moments throughout their football careers. The 2008-2009 athletic year saw their best winning-game streak with 17 games won that season. Since 2004, their overall game wins and losses were 148-73, which includes 73 wins and 38 losses at district games and 24 wins and 13 losses for playoff games. They’ve also made their way to the state playoffs since 2002, except for the 2014-2015 athletic season.
In addition to their fantastic winning seasons, the Prosper Eagles Varsity football team has entered the State Quarterfinals for the last three years, along with the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 football seasons. 2008-2009 was their best year when they made it to the state finals and won the Texas High School Football championship.
Many individual team members have also experienced their accolades through various awards and major career achievements. Most recent honors have been won by the wide receiver Tyler Bailey. In 2019, he won the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) award for Offensive Newcomer, and in 2021, he received an All-State honorable mention. Fellow teammates Cameron Harpole, Mason Jolley, and Aidan Siano also received honors as part of the TSWA All-state football team for the 2020-2021 season.
Dating back to the 2010-2011 football season through the current academic year, hundreds of Prosper Eagles players have won several awards as well as been part of four different honors teams, including the TSWA All-State team, the Texas High School Coaches Association All-State team, the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors All-State team, and the University Interscholastic League All-District team.
Beyond their high school football careers, a few highly talented individuals have found themselves in successful careers. Alumni Davis Webb played college football at Texas Tech from 2013 to 2015 and then moved on to the NFL as a quarterback for the New York Giants (2017), New York Jets (2018), Buffalo Bills (2019-2021), and currently for the New York Giants. Ben Banogu, another Prosper High School alumni, has played defense for the Indianapolis Colts since 2019. A Prosper alumnus you may recognize from YouTube’s Dude Perfect is Tyler Toney, a former quarterback at Prosper High School.
Rock Hill High School Football
Rock Hill High School is in its third year as a secondary academic institution. While they may not have the history of Prosper High School football, the Blue Hawks are certainly off to a great start. Quarterback Brenner Cox, guard Matt Sermania, and running back Donovan Shannon received honors as part of the TSWA All-State team.
Mark Wilkinson is the new athletic coordinator and head football coach for the Rock Hill High School Blue Hawks. He is in his 18th year as an educator and coach and has held several leadership positions in various successful programs. While Mark is new to Rock Hill, he’s not new to the Prosper school district. Before coming to Rock Hill, he was the head track coach and assistant football coach at Prosper High School.

EV vs. Hybrid vs. Gas vs. Diesel
The automobile is continuously evolving. The gasoline engine in the first ever car was a one-cylinder, two-stroke engine. Nowadays, some vehicles have as many as 12 cylinders. Diesel engines were created at around the same time as gas engines, but because of their distinct differences, diesel’s place in history took an alternate road. Interestingly, the first electric and hybrid electric cars were built in the same decade, the 1890s, with gasoline and diesel engines.
You might argue that since these vehicles all played a role in the birth of the automobile, the domination of the gas engine in the industry today was the best option. However, the world wants greener, more fuel-efficient options, which is causing the popularity of EVs and hybrid engines to rise. Some say that diesel will soon go the way of the dinosaur, and the gas engine isn’t too far behind.
Is any of this true, and if so, why? Unfortunately, you won’t find a simple answer as to which powertrain prevails over the other. We didn’t, but we thought we’d share what we found to help you to better understand the different powertrain options.
EV vs. Hybrid vs. Gas vs. Diesel Powertrain Differences

2022 Toyota Prius Prime Being Charged
Diesel engines burn less fuel than gasoline engines and use a compression ignition system to ignite the diesel fuel. Diesel engines are stronger because of the compression ignition, which makes them more durable and long-lasting. A diesel powertrain uses an exhaust gas recirculation system to capture unburned particulates and return them to the cylinders. Diesel engines produce much higher torque numbers, which makes them ideal for towing and hauling heavy loads over long distances.
Gasoline engines burn more fuel than diesel engines and use a spark ignition system to ignite the gasoline. Manufacturers don’t have to use a heavier engine construction to support the ignition, which makes them less durable than a diesel engine. Still, you can achieve significant power numbers with a gas powertrain when towing and hauling heavy loads. Traditionally, gas is more expensive than diesel, but recently, the price of diesel has surpassed gasoline. Despite this, the efficiency of diesel still makes it a cheaper alternative to gas.
The hybrid gas powertrain consumes less gas than straight gas engines and incorporates an electric motor into the system to provide additional power. Some hybrid powertrain cars, usually plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), can operate in electric-only mode. A PHEV has a larger battery than regular hybrid vehicles, which gives them a more extended driving range than electric-only power. This configuration provides significant fuel savings over straight gas engines.
EVs don’t burn gas or diesel. Instead, electricity powers them. The EV powertrain consists of an electric motor or motors and a single gearbox to distribute the power, which makes it a much smaller unit. You need a significantly larger battery pack to provide enough power to drive long distances. Most EVs have a top driving range of 200 miles on a single charge, and newer models achieve as much as 300–400 miles.
Electricity is cheaper than gasoline. However, electricity production predominantly uses fossil fuels and could offset any perceived green benefits. Opponents of EVs argue that EV batteries use rare earth materials that have a limited supply, and after the batteries no longer hold the charge, it is challenging to dispose of them properly.
Pros and Cons of EV, Hybrid, Gas, and Diesel Powertrains
Like we said earlier, there’s no simple answer. In many cases, how you drive has a significant impact on efficiency and performance, and your commute factors into which powertrain might suit you best. We will list each of the pros and cons below to help you to decide.
Diesel Powertrain Pros
- More efficient than gasoline.
- Provides higher torque for towing and hauling.
- Durable construction, which lasts longer with fewer repairs.
- Reliable refueling network.
- Bio-diesel fuel alternatives may offer better economy and less pollution.
Diesel Powertrain Cons
- Lower horsepower than gas and electric vehicles.
- Noisier than other vehicles.
- More pollution than other vehicles.
- Higher cost of repairs.
Gasoline Powertrain Pros
- More horsepower than diesel engines.
- Reliable refueling network.
- Lower cost for repairs.
Gasoline Powertrain Cons
- Traditionally higher fuel costs.
- More frequent repairs and maintenance.
Hybrid Powertrain Pros
- Better fuel efficiency.
- Quieter engines.
- Tax incentives offer additional savings.
Hybrid Powertrain Cons
- More expensive to purchase than gas-only vehicles.
EV Powertrain Pros
- Lower fuel costs vs. gas and diesel.
- Exceptional power on demand.
- Higher torque output.
- Lightweight and quiet.
- Zero emissions.
- Tax incentives offer additional savings.
EV Powertrain Cons
- Limited driving range.
- Its smaller refueling network requires more planning for long-distance travel.
- Fossil fuels used to produce electricity may offset any green benefits.
- EV batteries may present disposal problems.
The Impact of Your Driving Habits
Your driving habits impact your vehicle’s performance, regardless of the powertrain. For example, if you drive for an hour in the city with lots of stop-and-go traffic, you’ll use more fuel than if you were to drive for an hour on the freeway at cruising speeds. Those drivers with a so-called “lead foot” use more fuel than drivers who observe the speed limit.
Electric vehicles have a range of 200 miles or more. However, if you use other electrical systems while driving, these systems deplete your EV battery and lower your range. For instance, drivers in the Florida summer heat use their air conditioner to keep them cool, but this drains the battery. New England drivers need to use their heater and window defroster for those cold winter months.
The Winner Is…
We’re not sure that any powertrain wins or loses. Ultimately, it comes down to what you need from your vehicle. An EV or PHEV offers the best savings if you want a fuel-efficient commuter car. A fuel-efficient gas model may work well if your driving needs require longer trips in rural areas. Drivers needing to tow and haul heavy loads benefit most from a gas or diesel powertrain. Spirited driving enthusiasts looking to lower their carbon footprint love the power, performance, and zero emissions of the EV powertrain.

Continuing to drive a vehicle after you’ve identified a problem with the engine can damage your car or result in an accident, and engine repair can be very costly. If you suspect engine trouble, it’s best to call a tow truck right away.
Out of Gas
You can run out of gas by forgetting to fill up your gas tank or by overestimating how far you have to drive on the amount of gas you have. It can be an easy fix if you have access to more gasoline, but otherwise, your car won’t be able to run. You can call a tow truck to come and move your car and take it somewhere where you can fill it up with gas again. Alternatively, the tow truck may have some extra gasoline for emergencies that you can use in your car to get you to the nearest gas station.
Extreme Weather
Weather can surprise you when you’re on the road, and you may need some help to make sure you don’t drive in dangerous circumstances. For example, if you’re in a car when unexpected snow occurs, you may not be able to drive safely through the slippery and thick snow. In those cases, you can call a tow truck to remove your car without you having to drive it under scary circumstances.

They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and the charming town of Prosper, Texas, is a prime example of that. While the town itself is more quaint and cozy than it is big, it’s known by many as a “small town with big heart.” It’s also big on business, activities, and appeal.
Prosper has parks and trails. It has dining and nightlife. It has plenty of things to do. But have you ever wondered how Prosper came to be the fine city that it is today? Brought to you by Longo Toyota of Prosper, here’s the history of the town you love.
Live Long and Prosper

The area that would later become Prosper, Texas, was first settled back in 1846. It began as two separate communities, which were called Rock Hill and Richland. The soil there was rich, and land was cheap — farmers grew and sold cotton, and land could be bought for as little as $3.50 per acre.
The area began to be built up, gaining momentum when the county courts pushed for a quick sale of land plots for development. But it was the railroads that really put Prosper on the map. When the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway opened in Texas in 1902, Prosper was conveniently located along the route, approximately halfway between Dallas and Sherman. That was the same year that Rock Hill and Richland combined their land and resources to become a single town.
You Name It!
As this new town came into being in 1902, it still needed a name. Officials wanted to carry over the name Richland from the Rock Hill/Richland merger. However, they soon discovered that another Richland had beaten them to the punch — there was already a town called Richland elsewhere in Texas, which had been founded many years before Prosper. So the new community remained nameless.
To rectify the problem, the postmaster at the time sent out a query to the townspeople to help officially name the town and his newly established post office. A man known as J.C. Slaughter came forward. He said that since the crops had been especially prosperous that year, why didn’t they dub the town Prosper? The name stuck, and so did that outlook because the little town prospered indeed.
Everyone and Their Uncas
It wasn’t until 12 years later, in 1914, that Prosper was incorporated. The town had a population of just 500 at that point. With the incorporation of the town, they also elected their very first mayor. Although they called him U.N. Clary for short, the mayor’s full name of Uncas Norvell Clary won him a place on the list of “strangest names in political history.”
Nearly as unique as his name is his story: Not only did Clary serve as mayor for a whopping 49 years, but he was also involved in the management of the Prosper State Bank for 56 years until his retirement in 1965.
Getting Down to Business

In the beginning, Prosper built its success on the cotton and grain industries, including corn and wheat. Just how well the town was doing fluctuated, depending on what the going rate of these various cash crops was at the time. In its heyday, Prosper was cranking out 3,000 to 4,000 bales of cotton annually, which it shipped around the world, along with 75,000 bushels of wheat and dairy products worth thousands of dollars. Several different mills were built in Prosper to process the grains. The town also served as a shipping center for nearby farms.
Once the automobile began to be more commonplace, greater numbers of people traveled in and out of Prosper. Some just passed through, while many stayed and helped develop the area. Improvements in farming and the invention of mechanical farming equipment also bolstered the economy of Prosper. The population grew very slowly, however. Even in 1980, the city still had only 675 residents. But between 2010 and 2020, Prosper saw a 201% growth spurt in its population, and today over 31,000 people call Prosper home.
Old School
The first school opened the same year that Prosper officially became Prosper, in 1902. It had just a handful of teachers and 100 students — a fifth of the town’s total population at the time. That original little schoolhouse was sold in 1910 and later became a hotel. To replace it, they built a two-story red brick school building and brought in two additional teachers. Sadly, that school burned down in 1923. The next school to come along was also brick but had nine classrooms and a spacious auditorium.
Prosper’s academic facilities have come a long way since then. The present-day high school is a 590,000-square-foot educational palace with nearly 3,000 students. It cost over $113 million to build and includes a medical tech lab, a broadcast studio, and a greenhouse, along with a restaurant fit for a chef and an indoor football field. Go Eagles!

Prosper in the Present
Located about 32 miles from the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and 35 miles from downtown Dallas, Prosper owes some of its current prosperity to its position within the greater Dallas metropolitan area. It was even named the fifth best suburb in the Dallas area by D Magazine in 2010.
