Tires play a crucial role not only in a vehicle's handling and performance but also in its fuel efficiency and safety. If your tires are showing signs of wear, you can get exact replacements for the original tires at a competitive price at Longo Toyota of Prosper Service Center. Our factory-trained and certified Toyota technicians will ensure your tires are mounted, balanced, and inflated to match your Toyota model's specifications.

Signs Your Tires Need Maintenance or Replacement

Tires need ample tread depth, proper wheel alignment, and correct air pressure to perform properly and safely. Signs they might be wearing out or nearing replacement include:

  • Low tread.
  • Uneven tread wear.
  • Cracks, bubbles, and tears in the tread.
  • Below-average performance or ride quality.
  • Old age.
  • Vibrations or thumping while driving.
  • The vehicle pulling to one side while driving.

If you notice any of these signs, your tires might affect your vehicle's ability to corner, accelerate, and brake. They're also at risk of a flat or a blowout. It's crucial that you bring your Toyota in for tire service before it becomes unsafe to drive.

How Often Should You Inspect Your Tires?

Inspect your tires regularly so you know when it's time to have them serviced or replaced. Ideally, you want to perform a visual inspection once a month. Look for:

  • Abnormal tread wear or cupping, which usually means the wheel is unbalanced or the suspension or shock absorbers need replacing.
  • More wear in the middle of the tread than the edges, which occurs when the tire's overinflated.
  • More wear at the edges of the tread than the center occurs when the tire's underinflated.
  • Raised sidewall or tread, which might mean a tire belt has come loose.
  • Worn tread on only one edge of the tire, which can happen if the wheels aren't aligned properly.

These steps can help you pinpoint minor issues, such as nail punctures before they become serious. If you drive over debris or potholes, live in a region that experiences winter weather, or commute long distances, you might want to inspect your tires more frequently. Also, give them a hard look before going on a road trip.

How To Check Your Tire's Tread Depth

Tires require sufficient tread for traction, particularly on wet roads. You can check your tire's tread with a tread depth gauge or by using the following penny test.

Place a penny into the tread groove with Abraham Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can't see the top of his head, your tire’s tread depth is fine. If you can see the top of his head, you have less than 2/32 inches of tread left, which is unsafe. You'll want to bring your Toyota in for immediate tire replacement. Repeat the penny test in several locations on the tire, including the center, inner, and outer edges.

How To Measure Tire Inflation

Properly inflated tires get better gas mileage and last longer. Once a month, use a digital stick or dial gauge to measure the pressure in pounds per square inch. Here's how:

  • Check your owner's manual to confirm your Toyota's recommended inflation pressure.
  • Remove the valve cap from the tire.
  • Put the gauge over the valve stem and press down until you can't hear air escaping.
  • Read the gauge to see how much pressure is in the tire.
  • Adjust the air pressure by either pressing down on the valve stem to release air or adding air using an air hose.
  • Recheck the pressure to ensure it's now at the recommended level.
  • Replace the tire's valve cap.

Remember to check the tire pressure before driving the vehicle. Driving the vehicle causes the tires to warm and can result in an inaccurate reading.

What To Expect From a Tire Service

When you bring your Toyota into Longo Toyota of Prosper for tire maintenance, our certified technicians will perform these standard procedures to keep your tires roadworthy.

Tire Rotation

Tires wear differently depending on whether they're on the front or back wheels of the vehicle. This is because the front and rear wheels perform different loading, braking, and steering functions. To maximize your tires' performance and extend their life span, our technicians will rotate the tires at the recommended intervals for your Toyota model and miles driven.

Tire Balancing

Tires that are well-balanced wear more evenly and last longer. Our technicians balance the tires when they rotate them. They use weights and a balancer to adjust each tire's weight distribution and minimize vibration. We also perform tire balancing anytime we replace a wheel, remove a wheel for repair, or receive word that the driver has noticed vibrations.

Wheel Alignment

Toyota has specific wheel alignment recommendations to prevent uneven tire wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and poor vehicle handling. During your tire maintenance appointment, our technicians will measure your vehicle's wheel position to ensure it falls within this range and make corrections as needed. We perform wheel alignments whenever we install new tires or when drivers report drifting or pulling.
