Volunteer In Prosper, TX This Holiday Season

One of the best things about the holiday season is all the unique activities that go with it. You might host house parties, give thoughtful presents to friends and family, send out cards, or decorate your home with festive trinkets. There are probably a lot of things on your holiday bucket list this November and December. Yet, you might want to consider doing something a little less obvious, such as volunteering at a local charity. If you're looking for ways to give during this holiday season in the Prosper, Texas area, then keep reading for some good places to start. more Hospice and Palliative Care Image by RODNAE Productions is licensed with Pexels License Hospice care is all about creating an atmosphere in which people can spend their last days as comfortably as possible. There's a lot of work that goes into that environment, though, especially at this time of year, which is why places like Hospice and Palliative Care could use whatever help you can offer. This is a great way to give a huge gift to people living right in your community, and it doesn't have to cost you a lot of time or money. Hospice and Palliative Care is run by AccentCare, a health organization with several facilities devoted to providing the best end-of-life care to many individuals. There are two locations near Prosper: in Denton and McKinney. There are many ways you can choose to volunteer for this organization, from providing direct care to bereavement services to bringing your children to visit the patients and lift their spirits. If you're musical, you can even play your favorite songs for those in hospice care. Sign up to volunteer on the AccentCare website or call the location directly to ask about opportunities there. Locations: 6800 Weiskopf Ave., Suite 105, McKinney, and 225 W. Mulberry St., Denton. Heritage Farmstead Museum Why not combine having fun and learning something new while you volunteer? Heritage Farmstead Museum is a restored farm that operates as it would have back in the days when the Prosper area was first settled. This exciting and unique museum is home to thousands of historical artifacts, many of which the farm uses in its live exhibits. The stated mission of the museum is "to collect, preserve, and interpret late 19th and early 20th century Blackland Prairie history," so if you’re interested in the story and heritage of your local community, you're the sort of volunteer they're looking for. The Museum gives tours to school kids, and they’re currently looking for volunteers to guide children around the farm and tell them how everything works. Tour guides need to dress up in costume and learn the history of the farm and its way of life. Volunteers dressed in traditional garb also run each exhibit, so you might get the chance to work at a spinning wheel or blacksmith's forge if you happen to have the skills or the ability to learn. They get extra busy with special events for the holiday season, so they need your help more than ever. Location: 1900 W. 15th St., Plano. Love Thy Baby Love Thy Baby is one of the programs run by the North Texas non-profit charity, Love Thy Neighbor. This program aims to bring help to babies born prematurely, suffering from health problems, or living in an economic crisis. The program volunteers do this primarily by making and distributing blankets and clothing to babies in need. For over 15 years, this group has given out over 50,000 items to needy children and their families. They are always looking for new volunteers, especially during the holidays when the weather is cold, and people are most inclined to give. How can you help Love Thy Baby? Let’s look at a couple of ways. The organization is looking for people to run clothing drives and donation pickups, so if you're willing, you can certainly volunteer your services that way. If you have a talent for arts and crafts, you can join your fellow crafters to make items for babies in need. Similarly, if you knit, crotchet, or sew, use your passion and talent to help the babies who need it most. Best of all, creating these items is something you can do from the comfort of your home. So, if the winter weather has you tied down, you can still give this holiday season. Location (for drop off): 1569 W. Main St., Lewisville. Plano Children's Theater Therapeutic Arts Program This is yet another unique way to give back to the community. The Plano Children's Theater hosts a therapeutic arts program known as the Starcatchers, and they're looking for volunteers to help out this holiday season. This program is all about helping both children and adults with disabilities create beautiful art, whether it’s music, drama, or the visual arts. Starcatchers is dedicated to creating a positive impact within the local community through these amazing efforts. If you have an interest in the arts, you can volunteer to be a Performance Partner through the Starcatchers’ website. In this role, you'll be able to assist disabled people through every step of their artistic creation. You might help them to learn their lines, teach or help out with an art class, or work one-on-one with individual disabled actors. There's no better way to help people create and provide art to the community all at the same time. Location: 6121 W. Park Blvd., Suite B216, Plano. Whatever your skills or inclinations, there's a way for you to help out over the holidays this year. As you celebrate with your loved ones, don't forget about those less fortunate than yourselves. However small, don't be afraid to do your part and bring a little more love and joy into their lives. Did you like these ideas or have some more for us? Get in touch on our contact page or drop by Longo Toyota of Prosper to chat or check out a new ride for this holiday season.

Electric Vehicle Getting Charged

Where To Find EV Charging Stations Near Prosper, TX

If you're cruising around near Prosper, Texas, in an electric vehicle, it's important you know exactly where to find EV charging stations. Since electric vehicle technology is still relatively new, you can't drive your car too far without a charge, so being aware of where you can stop to recharge your battery is even more essential than it is for drivers of gas-fueled vehicles. Unfortunately, there aren't any electric vehicle charging stations in Prosper itself, but here's our list of places to charge near Prosper, plus a handy guide to understanding the specifics of charging stations. Celina Light Farms Charging Station Image by CityofStPete is licensed with CC BY-ND 2.0 Located in the nearby town of Celina at 1234 Homestead Court, this ChargePoint station offers a Level 2 J1772 (AC) 6.6-kW 27-amp port. This little station is open all day, every day, and there's no need to pay for the electricity. It's hidden away in the parking lot of The Nook, a local cocktail and market cafe. So if you're out and about, you can charge your car and grab a bite to eat at the same time. Cinemark Frisco Charging Station About 4 miles from Prosper at 6969 U.S. Highway 380, you'll find the Volta-serviced Cinemark Frisco EV charging station. This station offers six Level 2 ports at no charge (pun intended) that charge at a rate of 6.7 kW. You'll find this station near the Cinemark Dine-In Theater, Kitchen, and Bar, so you can watch a movie or have dinner while charging up your vehicle. Aubrey Walgreens EVgo Charging Station The Walgreens located at 26731 U.S. Highway 380 in the nearby town of Aubrey features a lovely EVgo charging station in its parking lot. It's open 24 hours and has a single Level 3 125-amp 50-kW port and a single Level 2 7.2-kW port. If you use the pay-as-you-go option, you'll pay 30 cents a minute for the faster Level 3 charger, while EVgo memberships lower your rate to between 25 and 27 cents a minute, with the option to reserve ports. If you want to subscribe to EVgo for membership benefits, that option is available on the EVgo website. Electrify America Charging Station Going to Walmart? Then you can charge your car while you're shopping. The Walmart in Denton has a charging station serviced by Electrify America featuring six Level 3 ports. If you want to use these super-fast plugins, you'll have to pay a fee, which varies between 16 and 32 cents a minute depending on the speed you choose. If you go there often, you could opt for a membership, which comes at a reasonable price and lowers your charging fee to between 12 and 24 cents a minute. The station is open 24 hours a day, and you can find it at 2750 W. University. North Lakes Park Charging Station Also located in Denton, the North Lakes Park charging station is serviced by ChargePoint. It's in the parking lot of North Lakes Park, making it convenient to charge your car while you play tennis or golf. The charging station is simple but reliable, offering two Level 2 J1772 27-amp 6.5-kW ports at a cost of $2.40 per hour. It's a great place to walk the dog or let the kids run free while you fill up your vehicle. You can find North Lakes Park at 2001 W. Windsor Drive. YMCA Frisco Charging Station At the local Frisco YMCA, you'll find a small EV charging station maintained by the Blink network. This station has three Level 2 80-amp 19.2-kW ports, which you can use for a fee of 49 cents per kilowatt. The station is open for use 24 hours a day and located at 3415 Main St. So if you have a YMCA membership, you can go take a class or workout, all while your car's battery fills up again. North Branch Library Charging Station A library is one of those places where it's easy to go in and spend hours looking at books and doing research. Take advantage of the time you spend at the library to charge your car. Denton's North Branch Library offers a ChargePoint charging station in its parking lot, which you can find at 3020 N. Locust St. The station sports two Level 2 27-amp 6.5-kW ports, which are offered at $2.40 per hour. It's available all day, every day, including when the library isn't open. Understanding the Charging Station With all this talk about kilowatts and levels and amps, you might be in need of some clarification. So, what do the kilowatts and amps of a charging station mean when it comes to charging your car? Charging station levels are assigned based on charging speed. There are three levels of charging stations: Level 1: Uses 120-volt AC power. Level 2: Uses 240-volt AC power. Level 3: Uses 480-volt DC power. If you want to determine how fast the station will charge your car, simply look at the level and the amps. Multiply the voltage of the level by the amps of the charging station, then divide by 1,000. That will tell you how many kilowatts of charge you'll get per hour. So if the port is Level 2 with 25 amps, your vehicle will charge at a rate of 6 kW an hour. If your battery is 42 kW, it'll take seven hours to get it fully charged. There are lots of places to charge your electric vehicle around Prosper, Texas. Many of these stations are free, while a few offer faster charges at a price. Most are right next to restaurants, parks, or grocery stores, so you can run your errands or enjoy yourself while your car recharges. Tow trucks can help you get your car to a mechanic quickly and safely. Here are some times you may need to call a tow truck: Engine Trouble If you're having trouble with your engine, you can call a tow truck to move your car without turning it on. You may notice you're having trouble because you hear a strange noise when the vehicle is running or your engine light is on. Continuing to drive a vehicle after you've identified a problem with the engine can damage your car or result in an accident, and engine repair can be very costly. If you suspect engine trouble, it's best to call a tow truck right away. Out of Gas You can run out of gas by forgetting to fill up your gas tank or by overestimating how far you have to drive on the amount of gas you have. It can be an easy fix if you have access to more gasoline, but otherwise, your car won't be able to run. You can call a tow truck to come and move your car and take it somewhere where you can fill it up with gas again. Alternatively, the tow truck may have some extra gasoline for emergencies that you can use in your car to get you to the nearest gas station. Extreme Weather Weather can surprise you when you're on the road, and you may need some help to make sure you don't drive in dangerous circumstances. For example, if you're in a car when unexpected snow occurs, you may not be able to drive safely through the slippery and thick snow.
